Elon Musk says he will allow former US President Donald Trump to return to twitter
Billionaire Elon Musk, in the midst of the process of buying Twitter, said on Tuesday (10) that he intends to end the permanent ban that the social network imposed on former US President Donald Trump.
The Tesla CEO spoke about the topic during an event on the auto industry organized by the Financial Times.
“Yes, I think it was not right to ban Donald Trump, I think it was a mistake. I would reverse the permanent ban. I don’t own Twitter yet, so this is definitely not something that will happen, because what if I don’t own Twitter? But in my opinion, and Jack Dorsey shares that opinion, is that we shouldn’t have permanent bans,” he said.
At the same event, Musk said banning the former president had “alienated much of the country.” According to the billionaire, the ban “did not take away Trump’s voice and will amplify it along the right.” Therefore, according to him, the ban would be “morally wrong and frankly stupid”.
Musk still needs to go through some bureaucratic steps to become the owner of Twitter, but he has already had the buyout offer accepted by the company.
Trump said in April that he will not return to Twitter even if his account is reactivated. The Republican’s plan is to strengthen Truth Social, a social network he launched but has not yet taken off.
The former president of Twitter banned after the January 6, 2021 invasions of the United States Congress. The social network said Trump was inciting violence.
On April 25, Elon Musk convinced Twitter to sell his entire control of the company for $54.20 per share, in a transaction valued at $44 billion – a 38% premium to the closing price recorded on the day. April first.
The deal was unanimously approved by Twitter’s board. The company’s CEO, Parag Agrawal, said he was proud of the work done by the employees and stated that “Twitter has a relevance that impacts the whole world”.
In turn, Elon Musk states in the statement that “freedom of expression is a pillar of democracy, and Twitter is the digital public square where the most important issues for the future of humanity are debated”. The entrepreneur also said he plans to make the social network “better than ever” through new features, making its algorithms open source, fighting bots and giving the authentication certificate to all human users.
