Biden administration wants to regulate TikTok
The Biden administration is considering a proposal that would give the US government more power over apps that it considers a risk to national security.
This is because the Biden administration is evaluating a proposal that, if approved, would give the US government more power to regulate certain apps – namely those considered to be a risk to US national security.
As reported by Business Insider, the proposal indicates that apps that are “owned or controlled by a foreign adversary” can be evaluated against a series of criteria. In this way, regulators evaluated whether the apps in question could be used to “conduct surveillance that allows espionage” or “military activities”.
The Commerce Department would also be empowered to require TikTok to provide the application’s source code to external auditors.
At this time it is not yet guaranteed that this proposal will be approved by the Biden administration. However, if confirmed, it would make sense given that the US President intended to carry out a more complete assessment of apps that pose risks to national security.
