YouTube banned ads related to gambling, alcohol, medications and even political and election ads from the header, that is, the banner displayed at the top of the website or app.

“We believe this update will build on changes we made last year to the masthead reservation process and will lead to a better experience for users,” a spokesperson for Google, which owns YouTube, said in a statement to CNN Business.

This is the second major change in YouTube’s header policy in less than a year, after the platform in November, banned advertisers from reserving that space for an entire day.

    The video service was one of three platforms that last year agreed to an external audit of its policies against harmful content, in addition to Facebook and Twitter.
