Netflix wants to prevent you from sharing your subscription with others
Netflix is carrying out a test to confirm that people sharing an account for its streaming service are, in fact, in the same house. The goal will be to prevent multiple unrelated people from sharing the subscription, avoiding paying for their own bills.
The test was seen by The Streamable, which indicates that some users are receiving notifications to enter the service in order to confirm that they are legitimate account holders. “If you do not live with the owner of this account, you must have your own account to continue watching [Netflix]” can be read in the notification that is being sent.
In a statement sent to CNBC, Netflix confirmed the test and added that the goal is also to ensure the safety of the users themselves. “This test was created to help ensure that people who use Netflix accounts are authorized to do so”, the statement said.
