“Social media is bad for dictators, that’s why Putin blocked us,” Sandberg said. “If you think about what is happening, if you think about what Russia was like before social media, you realize that the media were controlled by a single voice. That’s what social media has changed.”

Sandberg also took the opportunity to express concern about the Russians who lost access to Facebook, considering that their understanding of what is happening was affected by the absence of this type of digital platforms.

“I think it’s a shame that these services are inaccessible, because we don’t know what kind of information is available [in Russia] and it’s much, much more restrictive,” noted Sandberg.

Recall that, in addition to Facebook, Twitter was also restricted in Russia. On the other hand, TikTok has decided to block all content shared from Russia in order to combat the spread of misinformation.
