Epic Games acquired Houseparty in 2019 and, in March 2020, the app reached 17 million downloads. Its popularity is due to the fact that it has helped many people to socialize at a distance during periods of confinement.
Epic Games justifies the decision with the need for the Houseparty team to focus on new socialization features that are more “meaningful and authentic”.
