McAfee had been detained in Spain since October, and his death was confirmed by police authorities to the Spanish daily. The developer of the antivirus that bears his name was being held on suspicion of committing federal crimes in two US states.
However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the cause of death was actually suicide. John McAfee was 75 years old and was charged with tax evasion by the US government.
This was already the second charge in a short period of time, as the developer of the famous antivirus had already faced a charge involving money laundering with cryptocurrencies.

John McAfee is still supposedly related to pump and dump schemes. The most recent would be from the cryptocurrency Ghost, a project he abandoned a few days after saying he was in the project.
Furthermore, given the non-confirmation of suicide as the official cause of death, it was not long before conspiracy theories appeared.
Veteran Mr. Whale shared on his Twitter a McAfee post made in 2019. In the message, the developer claims that he was being harassed by US authorities, claiming he would never commit suicide.
John McAfee was found dead in Prison from an apparent suicide today. The same day he was supposed to extradited to the U.S.

McAfee even got a tattoo saying it was “erased”, in free translation. In this way, according to himself in the 2019 publication, he would die saying that he did not commit suicide.
In another publication also made in 2019, McAfee said that he had “31 terabytes of information” containing evidence of corruption from various governments. At the time, he threatened to make the information public if he was arrested or disappeared.
However, since John McAfee was known to be a turbulent figure, it was never possible to identify whether such claims were true.
